Climate and Health Actionable Research and Translation Center
According to the United Nations, 87% of the U.S. population and 68% of the global population are projected to live in cities by 2050. Climate change will have significant impacts on the health and well-being of urban populations, especially in under-resourced communities, through various pathways. For example, the spatial variation in ambient temperature has been shown to result in heat exposure disparities associated with low-income minority communities.
The Emory Climate & Health Actionable Research and Translation Center (CHART) aims to become a hub that will advance and translate research on climate risks to protect the health of under-resourced urban populations.
Vision
Atlanta’s history, diversity, persistent health disparities, research institutions, and policy and advocacy opportunities make it an ideal location for CHART to develop its central research theme of lowering climate-related disease burdens in under-resourced urban communities.
Mission
CHART’s mission is to generate new knowledge about the health risks associated with climate change in urban areas, particularly those related to heat exposure, and to translate this knowledge into action through equitable partnerships that enhance health.
Aims
Innovative Research on how heat exposure affects the health of people living in Atlanta Metro area, especially in under-resourced communities.
Capacity Building activities to inspire new research directions and promote the professional development of climate change and health researchers at Emory University and its partner institutions.
Research Translation that integrates community knowledge and concerns and enhances the implementation of community-led strategies in research
